The curriculum consists of an academic bachelor’s programme of 180 ECTS-points and a master’s programme of 60 ECTS-points. Our alumni may be found at work in the major theatre ensembles in Belgium and the Netherlands, in the music entertainment business, and in the media.
Language requirements
At the time of enrolling in the academic bachelor’s or master’s programmes for Drama, students/candidates must demonstrate that they have sufficient knowledge of the Dutch language. The following will suffice for this purpose: evidence of having successfully completed one year of secondary education in Dutch, evidence of having achieved at least 60 study points in a Dutch-speaking course of higher education, evidence of having passed level C1 of the Interuniversity Dutch-language Test for non-native-Dutch Speakers (the “Interuniversitaire Taaltest Nederlands voor Anderstaligen” (ITNA)), or other evidence from a centre for adult education or recognised language centre.
About the programme
The Drama programme focuses on personal development, art, quality and social involvement . We embrace diversity as a source of creativity and richness. We offer young artists the opportunity to find their own voice and develop their craft. Those who graduate from our programme are ready to depict and help shape the world in a unique and idiosyncratic way.
Our programme covers a range of disciplines including writing, audiovisual media, music, performance, text theatre, acting and theatre-making. You can choose between three pathways: Music & Creation, Acting & Creation, and Storytelling & Creation. In the first year, the programmes are largely the same. In the second and third years of the bachelor's programme, they become more specific.
How does it work if you want to study with us?
1. You take an entrance exam.
2. If you pass, you can start.
You will meet your fellow students, the programme managers, the teachers and the care team. You will also become part of the international community of the Music (classical and jazz) and Dance programmes.
Together with the other drama students, you will follow the general subjects from the curriculum. This package of lessons is supplemented with programme-specific subjects. You will also participate in interdisciplinary projects in which you will collaborate with students from other programmes. This will broaden your horizons and allow you to (re)discover aspects of yourself, your fellow students and the various art disciplines.
Students and teachers
Our study programme is created through the input of those responsible for the programme, teachers and students. Our teaching staff consists of artists and experts who often have an active practice outside of the school in addition to their teaching duties. We work together as a flexible team and are in constant dialogue with our students. This horizontal approach guarantees a programme that is relevant to the world, full of discussion and dynamic.
Research and quality
The Drama programme in Antwerp is known for the solid, traditional training it offers. We use a four-part structure for our programme:
- voice and speech
- body
- theory and reflection
- artistic praxis
Research, reflection, exercises and time are needed to develop in all these areas. You will be given this time. We encourage trying and experimenting, and we remove the word ‘failure’ from the dictionary. We would much rather look ahead with you to your unique path.
Mornings are devoted to supporting subjects, while afternoons are reserved for artistic praxis. In the evenings, we attend performances, sometimes there are rehearsals, or you have time for assignments and self-reflection. After all, time for yourself is also crucial. In the words of Goethe: ‘the craft of the performing artist develops on the stage, his art in his private life.’
Bachelor and master
Once you have completed the bachelor, you can choose a one-year master in Drama or a two-year educational master in Drama. You will complete your programme with a master project and a thesis. This will be your calling card for the professional field. Finally, we will see you off with a festive graduation and an iconic Tuinfest on the Arts Campus that has become your second home.
Our programmes and the diplomas we award are of academic level.
