Shostakovich conceived his Third Quartet as a story about WWII, giving each movement a subtitle: ""Calm unawareness of the future cataclysm""; ""Rumblings of unrest and anticipation""; ""The forces of war are unleashed""; ""Homage to the dead""; and ""The eternal question: why and to what purpose?"". However, he immediately removed those subtitles to avoid confrontation with Russian authorities.
In this performance, music, words and footage of WWII join each other to offer a journey through the war story behind this quartet.
