EMRUZ (TODAY) celebrates and opens up today's cultural Iran: contemporary, up-to-date, fresh, vibrant, metropolitan Iran and its diasporic representatives. On the 25th of April, during a symposium and a concert with video art, we put the diversity and richness of Iranian art and culture in the spotlight. The event, which is part of the International Week of Artesis Plantijn Hogeschool, aims at fostering intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding. EMRUZ, a research project of Liselotte Sels and a broader collaboration programme, aspires to act as a catalyst for a new wave of inspiration and creativity, looking ahead, and towards the world.
During the three sessions of the afternoon symposium, three clusters of art disciplines and cultural expressions are discussed from personal artistic points of view, with room for interaction. Well-known Dutch-Iranian writer Kader Abdolah focuses on the identity and significance of Iranian literature, in relation to his own contribution to it. Via the evocative, searching work of photojournalist Mashid Mohadjerin, light is cast upon film, photography and visual art by and about Iranians. Composer Aftab Darvishi, living in the Netherlands, takes care of the musical domain, in dialogue with the Iranian contemporary music scene and other contributors to the evening concert.
During the breaks, harpsichordist Liselotte Sels and singer Éloïse Mabille premiere and perform new music by Iranian composers.
