The photographic metamorphosis

The photographic metamorphosis is a research project in which the various strategies that artists currently use to approach 'the photographic' in their artistic practice are analyzed.

The photographic is regarded as an exploration of specific parameters of the photographic 'apparatus': the lens (and its optical laws), the shutter (the mechanical freezing of a snapshot), and the inscription of light on a photosensitive surface.

The research group Thinking Tools, affiliated with the Royal Academy of Arts Antwerp, investigates how artists relate to this technical device. In May 2016, Thinking Tools organized a symposium at the FotoMuseum Antwerp on the philosophy of photography by Vilém Flusser. Now Thinking Tools wants to broaden its research field to the border area where photography touches on painting, installation, video and performance.
